Moneyexpert.com intrigued by co-branded credit cards

Co-branded credit cards could be a type of product worth looking out for in the future, according to a sector commentator from Moneyexpert.com.

Pierre Williams, head of research at the firm, highlighted how Sainsbury's have launched two new cards that seem to offer very good deals - one for balance transfers and the other for Nectar points.

His comments were made following research by Datamonitor, which found that use of store cards went down by seven per cent and looks set to continue its decline.

Mr Williams stressed that no one should be worried about this trend, since people should not use them to borrow money as they do not offer competitive rates.

"Nobody should be shedding tears over the demise of store cards. Most charge hugely inflated rates and are arguably mis-sold in many cases. Watchdogs have repeatedly condemned them as a rip-off," he explained.

In his view, the only reason why anyone should take out a store card is to qualify for a one-off deal.
