M&S, HSBC, first direct to make exception on travel insurance policies

Claiming for a cancelled flight due to volcanic ash may not be a regular request travel insurance companies come across, but in light of recent events Marks & Spencer (M&S), HSBC and First Direct are allowing customers to see recompense for their disrupted travel plans.

As flights continue to be grounded – latest information indicates that flight restrictions will remain in place until 01:00 BST on Tuesday 20th April – customers of Marks & Spencer, HSBC and First Direct travel insurance have been reassured that their claims for disrupted travel will be met.

Chief executive of HSBC Bank, Paul Thurston, said: "Not all insurance policies are the same, but we at HSBC believe that standing behind our customers on this extraordinary occasion is the right thing to do at this time."

He described the disruption as an unprecedented event that has displaced thousands of people.

The cover for volcanic ash related travel disruptions will only apply to trips booked before midday Thursday 15th April.
