Demand for premium travel insurance increases

The number of people looking for high-quality travel insurance has increased since the disruption to flights caused by the volcanic ash cloud over northern Europe this week.

Research by moneysupermarket.com showed that visitors to its travel insurance website rose by 27 per cent since the airline trouble started, with Brits rushing to make sure that future holidays are not ruined.

Many of those are now considering premium cover packages, which usually offer insurance for flight delays and come at a much higher cost.

Bob Atkinson, travel expert at moneysupermarket.com said: "The effects of the volcanic dust cloud on global travel have been an unprecedented incident in aviation history... Travel insurance is now firmly on the agenda for British holidaymakers."

The website previously expressed disappointment at the reaction of travel insurers to the disruption, with many remaining unclear about what they will offer customers whose holidays have been affected.
