Deaf people offered debt advice by Citizens Advice

Citizens Advice has committed to reaching all parts of society with its finance service by offering guidance in British Sign Language.

A consultant on the project and deaf employee at the national charity's Wolverhampton branch Ernesto Bueno Del Carpio described how the content could help deaf people begin to understand about issues relating to debt, benefits, employment and discrimination.

"Very often deaf people are too intimidated to go to a bureau because they fear they will have communication problems," he explained.

The five videos were made with the help of volunteer advisers from Citizens Advice and offer guidance on how to book an appointment with the organisation, as well as more technical information about problems they may encounter.

Head of equality strategy at the charity Ali Harris noted that the launch was given the go-ahead after a pilot film was put up on video-sharing site YouTube in 2008.

Last month, a representative from the organisation stressed that irresponsible lending is a major contributor to debt problems.
