Sainsbury's Home Insurance advises checking tradesmen's cover

It is wise to check that a tradesman is covered against accidental damage before allowing them to carry out improvements to a property, an expert from Sainsbury's Home Insurance has suggested.

Ben Tyte, manager of the firm, noted that there appear to be more people hoping to carry out some form of modification to their homes currently and it can be costly if an uninsured professional causes major damage.

He stated: "We'd encourage all homeowners to only employ tradesmen with adequate cover, and to insist on seeing evidence of such before allowing work to start."

Sainsbury's Home Insurance revealed that as much as £118 million of damage may be caused by uninsured tradesmen each year.

Mr Tyte explained that the firm will look at each case individually, but many other insurance providers might not and this could leave homeowners out of pocket.

The same organisation recently revealed that it is offering new applicants £50 in shopping vouchers, if they apply for combined buildings and content insurance with a Nectar card.
