'Financial incentive needed' for sustainable society

People need to see sustainable choices as cheaper options if they are going to act in an environmentally friendly manner, according to one source.

Environmental manager for business and technology service company Logica Tony Rooke explained that people will make green choices if they involve spending less money and this is a phenomenon that should be utilised to achieve wider social change.

He stressed that many green initiatives are not currently affordable to people, even with more loans being made available specifically for such purposes.

Mr Rooke's comments were made following an announcement by the Green Party that they would introduce £2 billion worth of incentives each year to help people make their homes more energy efficient.

"To be a more sustainable person at the moment – to be able to afford to do things like putting solar water heating in - generally you've got to be quite a well-paid person," added the Logica representative.
