Direct Line highlights affordability of travel insurance

Travel insurance is not unaffordable and will cover people in a variety of situations, making it an essential for holidaymakers, according to a Direct Line spokesperson.

Erica Nelson pointed out that issues such as lost luggage and medical repatriation are much easier and less costly if people have taken out a policy.

She noted that some people might have been disappointed about the level of cover provided by their travel insurance in terms of offering accommodation while the volcanic ash cloud prevented planes from taking off recently.

However, the Direct Line representative explained that the airlines have a responsibility in such a situation, which is why many travel insurance providers had not included this cover in their policies.

"The reason there wasn't - and why most travel insurance policies don't offer it - is because by law the airlines are supposed to provide [accommodation]," remarked Ms Nelson.

These comments were made following the publication of research by the International Air Transport Association, which found that airspace restrictions during the volcanic ash delays cost airlines about $200 million (£130 million) each day.
