Halifax insurance offers tips for deterring bike theft

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at the company, made his comments after the firm revealed claims for bicycle theft rose 65 per cent during the summer months of 2009.
The organisation also put together a list of the top ten areas where such transportation is being stolen, with London and central Manchester occupying the first and second places respectively.
Mr Foulds pointed out taking photos of the bike and keeping receipts for any extra parts is advisable, while Halifax insurance suggested investing in a good lock, keeping a bicycle indoors and writing down the serial number of the item.
The company spokesperson added: "Many bikes that are stolen are locked up, but often some types of locks such as cables can be cut and are therefore not enough of a deterrent."
Halifax insurance recently claimed thefts from gardens went up by 58 per cent in the summer of last year.
