Dismissal of HIPs 'will strengthen housing market'

The housing market will benefit from the removal of home information packs (HIPs) as a requirement for homeowners trying to sell their property, according to a government source.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles described the documents as "expensive and unnecessary" and claimed that selling a home will be cheaper as a result of their suspension.

He stated: "HIPs are history. This action will encourage sellers back into the market and help the market as a whole and the economy recover."

Currently, the pack has been suspended, ahead of full abolition when primary legislation is passed.

Mr Pickles said he has made the move to send out a "strong message" to people considering buying or selling a property.

In his view, HIPs have been stifling the housing market.

This week, Rics director of communications Gillian Charlesworth agreed with the government official, suggesting the packs have failed to address problems in the buying process.
