Santander: Current accounts help youngsters learn value of money

Youngsters who take out Santander current accounts and earn their own wage are learning the value of money, according to a representative from the firm.

Helen Bierton, head of current accounts at the company, made her remarks after Santander found there are about 750,000 ten to 15-year-olds in the UK earning almost half a billion pounds a year between them.

She described it as "fantastic" that so many youngsters are wanting to work from an early age and the parents should be respected for giving them financial independence.

Ms Bierton noted: "The money generated is obviously great but the lessons learned should prove invaluable when it comes to managing finances later in life."

In her view, such youngsters will be in a better position when they get into the jobs market, as they will appreciate the value of money more.

Last week, it was revealed all Alliance & Leicester banking customers will be transferred over to Santander, effective from May 28th.
