Barclays Business highlights entrepreneurial spirit in UK

More people are deciding to start their own business for a variety of reasons, according to a representative from Barclays Business.

Steve Cooper, managing director of the firm, suggested individuals often have little choice but to make their own way, as they have lost their job.

He explained many small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are proving to be "resilient" in the current economic climate, with fewer businesses of this type failing than had been expected.

Mr Cooper highlighted how Barclays Business is seeing record numbers of start-ups, with 10,000 people being helped to open their own business in April, which is higher than any previous month before.

There is also a change to the type of people who are deciding to change their lives by starting their own firm, he noted, with younger people, women and immigrants all becoming more common in such arrangements.

In his view, the trading environment for businesses is particularly tough currently, since people are "holding back from spending", which means companies have to instil a desire in consumers to buy a product or service.

"You need to be asking yourself 'Why does someone want to buy my product or service as opposed to someone else's?' It needs to be unique, special and different," remarked Mr Cooper.

One factor that the Barclays Business spokesperson believes has influenced people - particularly the younger generation - is television, with programmes such as Dragons' Den and The Apprentice bringing money-making activities to the fore.

His remarks were made following the news that the Barclays Trading Places Awards will hand out £10,000 to the most inspirational businessperson nominated in the contest, with the finals due to take place in November.
