M&S Money highlights breakdown threat

Driving to a holiday destination could be an alternative to flying for people who are concerned about the travel issues taking place at the moment, such as the volcanic ash cloud, noted Marks & Spencer Money.

However, a representative from the firm pointed out it is important to have breakdown cover and sufficient insurance to carry out the trip.

Andrew Ferguson, head of general insurance at M&S Money, said: "With the recent air travel problems, many people may be looking for an alternative to flying. Travelling by car avoids the risk of flight delays and cancellations."

In his view, it could offer peace of mind to travellers if they know they are covered in case their vehicle breaks down.

The company highlighted how consumers should not assume their travel insurance policy will cover them in the European Union, since this is not always the case.

Last month, M&S Money claimed busy driving periods such as bank holidays often lead to higher numbers of breakdowns and car trouble.
