Saga Home Insurance finds Brits unaware of identity theft

Less than half of the adult population regularly takes steps to protect themselves from identity theft, according to new research by Saga Home Insurance.

Forty six per cent of adults are failing to do simple things like destroying personal letters, bills or receipts they no longer want to keep.

This is despite figures from CIFAS, the UK's fraud prevention service, which show that there were 120,000 reported cases of identity theft in 2004 - over six times the number in 1999.

As the new television advertising campaign featuring impressionist Alistair McGowan seeks to demonstrate, stolen identities can result in mortgage and loan applications being refused, debt collectors arriving on your doorstep, and in extreme cases even being arrested while travelling abroad.

Yet it is only the over 50s who appear to be taking the threat seriously, with 59 per cent always claiming to destroy their personal documents compared to 37 per cent of those under 50.
