Greater understanding of financial products needed, claims uSwitch.com

A spokesperson for uSwitch.com has suggested there needs to be greater understanding on the part of the consumer when it comes to taking on new financial products.

Senior PR manager at the website Jo Ganly pointed out that many accounts are sold to individuals who do not really require the benefits that a financial tool offers them.

She highlighted expensive payment protection insurance (PPI) as a particularly troublesome product, particularly when sold individually on credit cards and loans.

"The key thing for any consumer is to understand what they already have, understand what they need and then find out the best and most cost effective ways of filling the gaps," explained Ms Ganly.

These comments were made in response to a study by Which? that questioned the effectiveness of several products including PPI and extended warranties.

In her view, the report indicates people must think carefully before signing up for a financial tool.
