Post Office banking offer

Most post offices offer customers free cash withdrawals, the Post Office has said.

According to the figures, 97 per cent of the transactions are free.

The announcement came on the day that the Post Office gave evidence to the Commons treasury select committee's investigation on charges at ATMs.

The director of banking and financial services, Graham Halliday, said: "The Post Office is doing more than any other organisation to bring charge-free banking within the reach of the public."

The company made it clear to the select committee that it also does not make money from the ATMs at its branches.

There are ATMs in 2,500 of the Post Office branches. Where there are charges the company has ensured that it is capped at £1.50.

In the last financial year the Post Office lost £102 million, but the firm maintains it will continue to offer free services.
