Preparation is key for holiday finances, says Post Office

Holidaymakers travelling by car can save money by preparing for certain situations in advance, according to a representative from the Post Office.

Head of the company's Travel Money arm Sarah Munro explained that people may be charged more for petrol in Europe, so it is important to check the rates in their destination country compared to the UK.

She noted that currently unleaded petrol is probably cheaper in the UK, whereas research by the firm showed that diesel can be bought for a lower price on the continent.

"The key to a great holiday is in the planning and preparation, so if you do all the hard work before you go then should enjoy it more when you get there," remarked Ms Munro.

In her view, it is advisable to steer clear of motorway service stations as well, since facilities in towns tend to be cheaper.

However, she pointed out that some rural gas stations may not accept credit cards.
