Halifax points out DIY trends

Several DIY trends have been highlighted by new research from Halifax, with a drop in house purchases potentially linked to this phenomenon.

Stephen Noakes, commercial director at Lloyds Banking Group, made his comments after Halifax research showed that 56 per cent of home owners have carried out home improvements on their property in the past year.

He suggested the fall in house purchases could be a factor in this situation, although he claimed that Brits have always enjoyed doing DIY on their houses.

"Our research shows that more and more home owners are picking up their brushes and paint and using their creativity to improve their surroundings," explained Mr Noakes.

The study showed that 65 per cent of people have given a room a new coat of paint or put up wallpaper.

Last month, Halifax revealed that house prices in seaside towns showed significant growth between 2001 and 2009, with the value of such homes increasing by 92 per cent on average during that period.
