Confused.com suggests best energy deals are online

People should be sure to check for the best energy offers online before signing up for a contract, according to Confused.com.

Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at the site, made his comments after the firm revealed that some providers are sending door-to-door salesmen out, who are marketing products that could end up costing people more money overall.

He said: "Our research reveals customers could end up paying £183 more than they need to as door-to-door salesmen are unable to offer the discounts that are applied online."

Confused.com noted that the elderly and the vulnerable in particular may be at risk of being sold a poor product and Mr Kloet recommended turning salesmen away.

The firm explained that salesmen will normally only be able to offer a restricted number of deals if they work for one energy provider.

This week, Mr Kloet advised customers to be wary of standard tariffs, as they can be some of the least competitive contracts on the market.
