Student life 'has got more expensive'

People studying at universities and colleges in the UK are having to deal with greater expenses with less income, according to one source.

Head of policy at University and College Union Paul Cottrell explained that the difficult economic situation is making it harder for students to find part-time work, which brings down the amount of money they have to live on.

The situation is being exacerbated by extra costs for working materials used in subjects such as art and field trip expenses, which previously may have been funded by the educational establishment, he noted.

Mr Cottrell said: "One quite interesting thing to pick up on is that they are now expected to pay for things themselves which used to be paid for as part of the course."

These remarks were made in response to research by Sainsbury's Finance, which indicated that £37 million of personal loans was taken out by students in the year to February 2010.
