Aviva highlights psychological power of financial situation

Consumers who have control of their finances are more likely to be happy, according to a recent study.

The amount of control that individuals have on their money is a bigger influence on happiness than how much they earn, according to research carried out by Aviva in conjunction with a psychologist form City University in London.

It was found that two-thirds of people in the UK enjoy good or high self-esteem. Of those who fall into the top category, 85 per cent of those feel in control of their money.

In comparison, 70 per cent of the people who are suffering from low self-esteem do not feel in charge of their money and not one respondent in the group was happy with their financial situation.

Earlier research by the group indicated that people in the UK are happier than they were five years ago.

Overall, seven out of ten people said that they were pleased with their current situation and Edinburgh was found to be the most content city.
