Mortgage lending up 7% in May

Gross mortgage lending rose by seven per cent during May, it has been revealed.

According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), borrowing totalled an estimated £11.3 billion last month, compared to £10.5 billion in April.

Although the UK property market is more buoyant than last year, it is still relatively subdued, the organisation warned.

CML economist Paul Samter said that although next week's Budget is unlikely to include mortgage-specific direct tax measures, the property market is likely to be affected by confidence and squeezes on household finances.

"Financial sector regulation is a further source of uncertainty. The chancellor has announced that the Bank of England is to take on regulatory responsibility for the banking system," he added.

The National Association of Estate Agents has urged the government to take steps to stimulate the housing market next week by creating incentives for first-time buyers and holding a Stamp Duty review.
