Halifax calls on sports fans to have home insurance in place

Sports enthusiasts are being urged to insure their homes this summer and protect against breakages.

Figures released by Halifax show that claims for broken windows and accidental damage rose by 37 per cent last summer.

The organisation noted that youngsters are more likely to be out in the garden demonstrating their tennis and football skills during the warmer months, which can lead to balls smashing through windows.

"With 2010 being a World Cup year we anticipate even more sport-related mishaps as people host parties in the home, practice their sporting skills around the home, or simply get carried away with the excitement, spilling food and drink on the carpet in the process," said David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance.

Residents in Harlow are the most likely to claim for breakages, followed by those in Ipswich and Basingstoke, with the average claim costing £235.

Speaking earlier this year Julie Owens, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said consumers can save a great deal of money by comparing quotes across several policy providers.
