NAPF backs Osborne's pensions tax relief plans

The National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF) has backed plans to reform the pensions tax relief policy.

Chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne confirmed in today's emergency Budget that the government would look to simplify tax relief for higher earners on pensions.

According to Joanne Segars, chief executive of the NAPF, this is a welcome development, as the Labour administration's policy could have been disastrous if it had been implemented.

Indeed, she argued that the pensions of all working people, and not just those on high incomes, would have been damaged.

"We are pleased the chancellor has listened to our argument for a much simpler and more radical solution," Ms Segars commented.

Friends Provident also hailed the move, describing it as "encouraging" and a "step in the right direction".

Chief executive Trevor Matthews said this would help to remove the uncertainty that has affected pension planning in Britain for some time.
