Standard Life welcomes plans to review default retirement age

Standard Life has welcomed the government's decision to review the current default retirement age of 65.

The announcement was made in yesterday's (June 22nd) Budget, meaning employees may have the opportunity to continue working as long as they wish.

"People do not want to be told they should stop work at a certain age. Some people want to work for longer, because they are fit and enjoy what they are doing," said Andrew Tully, senior pensions policy manager at Standard Life.

Others may need to work because they have inadequate savings or have family members depending on them, he commented.

He added that people should be allowed to continue working on their own terms.

Speaking earlier this week, Michelle Mitchell, charity director of Age UK, said the default retirement law is hugely unpopular and well past its sell-by date.

She called for a clear commitment to be given by the government to scrap this.
