Air Passenger Duty 'will increase with inflation'

Air Passenger Duty is expect to increase in line with inflation, as the previous government proposed.

Spokesperson for ABTA, Frances Tuke, said that the increases will come in from November but will stay much as the Labour government had planned it.

However, she stated that there is a proposal in place for the tax to be levied per plane, which the organisation agrees with.

"What we don't know is what level that will be set at and what we're very keen to make sure is that people are not taxed out of the skies," she explained.

Ms Tuke added that if the increases were too high it would be likely to be harmful to the economy and the tax that is taken.

It is estimated that the increase in this tax will bring in revenues of £3.8 billion a year by 2015-16, compared with the £1.9 billion that will be taken this year.
