Santander current accounts predicts £260m spend after World Cup fall-outs

Football fans are expected to spend £260 million buying gifts and taking their other half out to compensate for ignoring their partners while they watch the World Cup.

With England now out of the tournament, that spending could start sooner rather than later. Many men expected to spend £111 on gifts and peace offerings following the end of the World Cup.

Research conducted by Santander current accounts indicates that 2.7 million football fans will take their partners out for meals or book breaks away to make up for not being around because the football tournament is on.

Out of those 2.7 million, 100,000 said they would spend over £500 in post-football patch-ups. And it is not just the men. Football mad women expect to spend an average of £67 each on World Cup make-up gifts.

Despite this, just ten per cent of supporters predict that watching the match will cause a domestic riff off the pitch between them and their partner.

With new customers able to get £225 just for switching to Santander current accounts this summer, perhaps all the treats and present costs can be easily recovered.
