AA insurance warns of driving test charges

Learner drivers are being targeted by third-party websites charging additional administration fees to book theory and practical driving tests.

AA insurance has been informed by some young drivers trying to secure their tests that third-party websites are offering to make the booking on behalf of the learner and then charge them admin fees of up to £40.

According to Simon Douglas, director of AA Driving School, many of these sites are cleverly disguised. It has led to some confused learners parting with large sums of money to book a test that they could have secured for much less through the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) website.

He said: "Paying hiked-up fees for help to book your test is a waste of money few learners or their parents can afford."

The DSA allows learners to book theory and practical driving tests directly through their own website, costing £31 for a theory test and £62 for a practical driving test.

Last week, AA insurance commented on the proposed rise of insurance premium tax and VAT announced in the June Budget saying it would "add to the burden of everyday purchases."
