Moneysupermarket.com reports £9,150 saving for stopping smoking

Consumers who give up cigarettes can expect to have saved around £9,150 since the smoking ban was introduced.

According to a report by Moneysupermarket.com, this figure is down to a saving of £4,950 on critical illness cover since the ban on smoking indoors in public places was brought in on July 1st 2007.

Furthermore, £4,190 could have been saved through simply not buying any cigarettes at all during the three years since the law was introduced.

Emma Walker, head of protection at the website, said that in order for someone to be classed as a non-smoker and be entitled to the lower insurance rates they need to have quit for at least 12 months and not to have used any form of tobacco substitute in that time.

A recent study from uSwitch.com found that 33 million people have concerns over their money following on from the increases in taxes like VAT in the wake of the emergency Budget.
