Quit smoking and invest the money in a Santander savings account, says expert

People who invest money into a Santander savings account rather than spend it on tobacco could build up a sizeable nest egg, a spokesperson from the organisation has asserted.

Matt Hall, head of savings at the firm, noted that people can use the cash that they would have spent on cigarettes to put money aside for the future or pay down their mortgage.

His comments follow research by the company, which showed that a 20-a-day smoker could have utilised a Santander savings account to build up a nest egg of close to £7,000, if they saved their tobacco money over the past three years.

"The simple truth is by giving up today smokers will not only improve their health but [also] their bank balance," said Mr Hall.

Santander noted that today (July 1st) is the third anniversary of the smoking ban in the UK, which York publication The Press recently noted has coincided with a fall in the number of heart attacks in the country.
