Which? mobile phones expert welcomes EC regulations

A new set of regulations introduced by the European Commission (EC) has been welcomed by a Which? mobile phones expert.

Ceri Stanaway explained that it could stop plenty of people from running up huge bills while holidaying in Europe, although she stressed that the new rules only apply to European Union (EU) countries.

As a result, she advised users to still be careful if they are heading to a nation outside of the EU.

But Ms Stanaway welcomed the regulations nonetheless and hailed the opt-out clause, since some people would prefer to pay higher costs as long as they can continually use their phone abroad.

"It's great that there is now a safety net in place, so people who – for whatever reason – don't realise how much it is going to cost them won't run up those extortionate bills," she added.

The EC regulations began at the beginning of July and involve an automatic data-roaming limit of €50 (£41.50).
