Confused.com insurance highlights increase in car cover

The cost of car insurance has risen during the second quarter of the year, according to Confused.com insurance.

Motorists will have to shell out around 14.2 per cent more for their cover, equating to £74 on the cost of their policy, compared with the first three months of 2010.

As a result of this increase, the price of insuring a vehicle has gone up by an average of 31 per cent in the past 12 months, the Confused.com/EMB Car Insurance Price Index found.

Simon Lamble, product director at the website, said that price comparison sites have over the past two years forced insurers to keep their prices down and have driven up competition.

"In order to secure customers, insurers have been forced to repeatedly slash their margins, but inevitably this could not continue," he added.

Drivers who own a caravan now have the option of taking out a tailored insurance policy with Confused.com insurance.
