Halifax mortgages help first time buyers

Halifax mortgages are helping first time buyers make it onto the property ladder with a range of 'extras' to compliment its mortgage deals.

The UK's largest mortgage lender is offering a choice of extras, which include £250 cashback and refunds on the cost of the valuation and conveyancing fees.

First timers can add any of these extras to either a low variable or fixed rate mortgage if they so choose.

"First Time Buyers want more than just a catchy mortgage deal," says the head of mortgage products at Halifax, Craig Donaldson.

"Our experience shows they need a combination of advice, expert knowledge and mortgage deals which will enable them to reduce the costs of buying their first home."

It follows recent figures that found 92 per cent of the UK's main postal towns are considered to be unaffordable for first time buyers.

In the run up to the election, John Prescott recently announced new government plans to help first time buyers enter the market.

Other possibilities include shared ownership and the government's Key Worker Homebuy scheme, whereby teachers and NHS staff can get interest free loans of up to £50,000.
