Julie Owens, head of home insurance at the website, explained that opting for a basic arrangement may not offer sufficient protection, which means that some possessions or parts of a property could remain uninsured.
She said: "At a time when people are feeling the pinch, it is easy to assume a standard home insurance policy will be enough for you - however, this could be a mistake."
These comments were made after the firm revealed that one in ten households made a claim on their home insurance last year.
The moneysupermarket.com insurance expert pointed out that levels of cover can vary significantly and it is important to know the difference between the most basic deals and more comprehensive protection.
Last week, the firm highlighted the need for people to check their policy before they go on a road trip around Europe.
