Over-50s have become more internet savvy, says Saga insurance

The over-50s tend to do a lot of research before they make a purchase, which has led them to become more internet savvy, according to Saga insurance.

Naomi Thornton, press officer for the company, pointed out that the firm has set up a social networking platform for the age group, which is aimed at encouraging more people to go online.

She suggested this has helped individuals in this demographic to get talking to like-minded consumers and get recommendations regarding which are the best businesses to deal with.

Ms Thornton explained that the over-50s often enjoy using the internet to research products, adding: "They tend to research larger purchases like cars online and then prefer traditional face-to-face purchasing."

According to research by Saga, this group spent about £4 billion on credit cards abroad during 2009, with a representative from the organisation suggesting that people should be on the lookout for a card that does not charge an overseas transaction fee.
