Legal & General pensions highlights importance of flexibility

It is vital that people have the flexibility to decide when they want to retire and draw on their savings, a spokesperson from Legal & General pensions has asserted.

Managing director of workplace savings at the firm Tony Filbin stated that it "makes sense" for individuals to be able to choose when to stop working, as well as when they want their pension to begin paying out.

His remarks follow the news that the government is scrapping the default retirement age.

Mr Filbin went on to point out that younger workers would do well to sign up to a long-term savings scheme, even if they can only put aside a small amount every month.

The Legal & General pensions expert said: "We can't stress enough the importance of starting saving as early as possible, as your money has longer to enjoy investment growth."

Meanwhile, Saga responded to the government plans by calling for stepped retirement by negotiation, with pensioners able to work part time if they wish.
