Insurance for young drivers firm Diamond highlights motoring trend

While speeding teenagers may be largely responsible for the high cost of motor insurance for young drivers, new research has found that suburban housewives are just as likely to be a nuisance on the nation's roads.

Looking into the driving habits of around 300,000 UK housewives, insurer Diamond found this group tends to drive cars that are both more powerful and more expensive than those driven by other women.

Indeed, the typical housewives' car is around £1,530 more expensive than that of a working British woman.

Notably, the study also found that, even though housewives drive an average of 619 miles a year less than other women, they are 11 per cent more likely to have a speeding conviction.

"It seems that TV's Susan, Bree, Gabrielle and Lynette aren't the only housewives with a love of fast, expensive cars," commented Diamond managing director Sian Lewis.

"The UK's housewives certainly seem to enjoy life in the fast lane as well,"

Diamond, which provides insurance for young drivers as well as for housewives, has also recently revealed that women tend to crash at slower speeds than men.
