Savings accounts provider Halifax urges consumers to watch pennies

Halifax has advised Britons to "look after the pennies" by taking more care over their loose change.

According to a new survey from the savings accounts provider, UK consumers are allowing a collective £42.9 million to languish in pockets, handbags and down the back of the sofa.

The average Briton believes they could find £1.61 in loose coins by examining their living room furniture, while the greatest value of loose change - £3.59 - is likely to be discovered in a desk drawer.

Halifax spokesperson Flavia Palacios Umana urged people to "manage these small sums more wisely" with the help of a savings account or other financial product.

"The old saying 'take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves' continues to be firmly the case," she commented.

Last week, research from Halifax revealed that the total value of privately owned housing stock in the UK increased by £2,000 billion between 1999 and 2009.
