Underinflated tyres could push up price of car insurance for young drivers

Cheap car insurance for young drivers may be difficult to obtain after Cooper Tire Europe warned of the dangers of travelling with underinflated tyres.

According to the organisation, people who take to the road without having their tyres inflated to the recommended levels risk being handed a fine and points on their licence.

Julian Baldwin, managing director of Cooper Tire Europe, warned that underinflated tyres could also be a possible safety hazard.

"Braking distances can be greatly affected by underinflated tyres and even more so when combined with a car full to capacity," he commented.

Cooper Tire Europe encouraged motorists to check the recommended tyre pressure in their car's handbook.

This comes after a study by Kwik-Fit found that four million drivers who are taking their car on holiday this year do not plan to perform basic checks of their vehicle before setting off.

Figures showed that one in five road users will not check the tyre pressure ahead of a journey, while almost half will not see if the tyre tread meets legal requirements.
