Slashed road safety budget may push up price of car insurance for young drivers

People with car insurance for young drivers may face higher premiums due to cuts in road safety budgets.

The Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership is likely to be among those bodies hit by a reduction in government funding.

As a result, it is considering steps such as deactivating some speed cameras, as it believes it cannot afford to keep running the devices.

Widespread cuts, details of which will be released in October's Spending Review, are being implemented by the coalition government as part of its efforts to tackle the UK's budget deficit.

Karen Delaney, spokeswoman for the Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership, commented: "We would like to think we will still be in a position to do some enforcement work, but we will be relying heavily on partners such as the police."

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, she added that the group has only been able to carry out a full operation this year because it has funds left over from 2009, but these will dry up within eight months.

This comes after government figures showed that road fatalities in the UK fell to 2,222 last year.
