Motorists with car insurance for young drivers 'waste petrol by driving when lost'

Male motorists with car insurance for young drivers could be paying more than they need to by driving when they are lost.

According to Sheilas' Wheels, men can pay as much £2,000 in petrol costs by continuing to drive when they do not know the route.

Figures also showed that 26 per cent will wait for at least 30 minutes before stopping to ask for directions, while 12 per cent will not seek any assistance at all.

Jacky Brown, spokeswoman for Sheilas' Wheels, commented: "Lost miles can add up and become costly, so if you're looking to save on petrol, we suggest you plan and prepare your route well in advance."

Research by the car insurance provider indicated that women are less reluctant to ask for directions if they get lost.

Nearly three-quarters said they would be prepared to seek help, with more than a third saying they will ask for assistance as soon as they realise they have gone off course.

This comes after Sheilas' Wheels revealed that men are more likely to claim on their car insurance during the summer than women, as they are more easily distracted at this time of year.
