Car insurance for young drivers 'becomes more expensive for university students'

People with car insurance for young drivers could see their premiums go up when they start university, experts have stated.

According to moneysupermarket.com, this is because insurance providers typically charge more for vehicles that are based in a city centre instead of suburban areas.

The price comparison site has therefore recommended that university students consider whether they really need a car when they are studying.

Estimates from moneysupermarket.com suggest that having a vehicle while at university could push up the cost of a student's car insurance by more than £3,000.

Steve Sweeney, head of car insurance at the website, added that if students decide they do need their motor, they should search the market for the best policy.

"It's crucial students getting behind the wheel shop around," he commented.

Mr Sweeney said this would "guarantee their money stretches as far as possible".

This comes after Which? reported that nearly two-thirds of drivers who shopped around for car insurance were able to secure a lower premium.
