People with car insurance for young drivers 'more willing to carry passengers'

Motorists with car insurance for young drivers are happier carrying passengers than their older counterparts, a new study has found.

According to Continental Tyres, people in their 50s are 33 per cent more likely to prefer travelling alone than drivers in their 20s.

This was said to be partly because many older motorists find passengers annoying, particularly if they make obscene gestures to other road users, snore loudly throughout the trip or constantly comment on every turn and manoeuvre.

Drunk passengers and those who constantly need a toilet break throughout the trip were also said to be especially irritating.

Tim Bailey, safety expert for Continental Tyres, commented: "We would suggest calmly letting the passenger know that what they are doing is distracting you."

He said the fact that motorists are irritated to such an extent by their passengers is a worry, as the driver must be alert and focused in order to avoid losing concentration.

This comes after Continental Tyres revealed that more than eight in ten drivers think the state of Britain's roads has deteriorated in the last year because of adverse weather.
