A pensions expert from Hargreaves Lansdown has pointed out that there are often a variety of sources that contribute to a person's retirement income.

Danny Cox, a spokesperson for the firm, explained that people might enjoy the fruits of a company pension, state contribution, property and Isas, all of which could offer people a return for when they stop working.

"Diversify your retirement savings to avoid having all your eggs in one basket. However, don't be too quick to dismiss pensions: the tax relief on contributions is very beneficial," he advised.

Mr Cox noted that a "mist" often surrounds the world of savings, but he urged people to get past this, since there are products around to suit people in different circumstances.

This advice was offered through Unbiased.co.uk, which recently encouraged individuals to take advantage of tax-efficient employee share schemes in order to get a competitive return on their cash.

The firm claimed that UK workers have missed out on £141 million in tax breaks this year.
