More people living alone says fixed rate mortgages provider Halifax

Research by Halifax has shown a variety of new trends in the mortgage market, such as more people living alone, according to a source at the firm.

Housing economist at the company Suren Thiru made his comments after the publication of the Halifax Property Type Review.

He suggested that more people are living alone, since there has been a rise in the number of terraced houses and flats being bought.

Mr Thiru remarked: "The changing pattern of homes bought over the past decade highlights some significant socio-economic forces."

The Halifax spokesperson also highlighted how detached properties saw the biggest price rises over the past year, although all types of home have generally gone up in value during this time due to the shortage of supply and low interest rates.

Recently, the same organisation revealed that a survey has shown that people like to carry out work on their house to make it their dream home, with just 19 per cent of respondents wanting to find a property that requires no alterations.
