CCCS highlights need for debt relief among jobless

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) has noted that there is causal link between debt and unemployment, with many jobless Brits weighed down by huge debts.

Chairman of the organisation Malcolm Hurlston pointed out that the loss of work can have devastating consequences for people and their families.

His comments were made after CCCS research showed that one in eight individuals claiming Jobseeker's Allowance owe an average of £15,412.

"Our experience shows that once somebody with few financial options is forced to take out a loan to cover living costs they are often then trapped in debt for years to come," said Mr Hurlston.

He urged anyone looking for debt relief advice to speak to CCCS and called for the government to pay attention to how welfare cuts will impact those who owe a lot of money.

This week, head of consumer finance at Lovemoney.com Ed Bowsher predicted there is likely to be more personal debt written off by banks in 2011, as more people lose their jobs and are unable to pay back borrowed money.
