Car insurance for young drivers will involve new history check with swiftcover.com

Applicants attempting to secure car insurance from swiftcover.com will be subject to additional background checks, which a representative from the firm claimed could keep premiums down in the future.

Steve Gaywood, counter-fraud and compliance manager at the company, explained that the automatic check of people's claims histories will help catch out those who try to "buck the system".

"It is not fair that safe, law-abiding drivers should pay higher premiums to subsidise people who lie about their previous claims to get cheaper insurance," he noted.

The system is aimed at ensuring individuals are given the correct quote for their circumstances, according to swiftcover.com.

Mr Gaywood accepted some motorists who previously lied on their applications may decide not to use the insurance provider again, but he suggested that the firm is determined to deal with honest drivers.

This week, moneysupermarket.com advised people that buying a new car could cut the cost of insurance by as much as 20 per cent.
