Scot Gorman, travel insurance manager at the firm, explained how a premium could be useful if somebody is the victim of a crime while they are abroad.
Another situation in which it would be ideal to be covered is if luggage goes missing somewhere between home and the final destination, he added.
However, Mr Gorman pointed out protection against significant overseas medical bills is also a great reason to take out a policy, after Sainsburys Insurance indicated such expenses have gone up 6.25 per cent in the past year.
He said: "The message is clear, if you do not protect yourself by taking out a comprehensive travel insurance policy then you could be left facing bills that run into the thousands."
The new Gold Credit Card from Sainsburys Finance includes family insurance as one of its features.
