NLA claims buy to let mortgage holders could see arrears increase

The National Landlords Association (NLA) has suggested cuts in the local housing allowance (LHA) could make the market worse for its members.

Chairman of the organisation David Salusbury claimed many buy-to-let mortgage holders will not be aware of how a cut in LHA could impact them.

He admitted the amount being spent by the government on this form of benefit may need to be trimmed, but urged officials to consider the effect changes will have on the affordability of accommodation for many people.

"Landlords are already struggling to deal with rental arrears and this will only worsen if benefits paid to tenants are reduced," added Mr Salusbury.

The NLA stated the reduction in housing benefit is expected to be about £12 on average.

According to DirectGov, LHA is currently paid to private tenants who rent their accommodation from a private landlord and are on a low wage.

The amount paid out also depends on the size of the house and the area it is in.
