Bad image increases premium for insurance for young drivers, claims moneysupermarket.com

Young men are paying more for their motor insurance as a result of their image, according to moneysupermarket.com.

Head of car insurance at the site Steve Sweeney claimed that male drivers are often charged more for their premium until they reach their 50s.

Research by the company showed that 18-year-old men pay an average of 79 per cent more than women of the same age for cover on a vehicle.

"Young male drivers traditionally bear the brunt of a 'boy racer' reputation through the cost of their premiums," said Mr Sweeney.

In his opinion, females are charged less because they are perceived to be more mature and safer as motorists, with men seen as a bigger risk on the roads.

The price comparison site noted the largest quote it received for an 18-year-old man driving a 1.4L 2005 Fiesta in Manchester was £10,138.33.

This month, the same organisation found one in 20 drivers under the age of 35 had staged an accident in order to make a fraudulent claim from their insurance company.
