Confused.com highlights car insurance for young drivers 'scandal'

It has been described by a Confused.com expert as scandalous that customers are being charged to have their details changed on insurance policies.

Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at the website, made his comments regarding research by consumer watchdog Which?, showing that people are being charged to alter simple things such as their marital status.

He said: "While recalculating a policyholder's risk may lead to an understandable increase in premium, some of the fees seem scandalously out of proportion."

In his opinion, the best thing consumers can do is read the small print on insurance policies before they sign on the dotted line, particularly if they think they may have to make a change to their personal details.

Meanwhile, Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith called on firms to start treating their customers fairly when it comes to administration charges, which he believed should be "proportionate and transparent".

He suggested some companies may find it hard to justify their fees.
